The District 11-4A rivals battled for the Class 4A state championship and it went down to the wire before the second-seeded Mustangs edged the top-seeded Rams 49-48 at Burton Coliseum Saturday afternoon.

Tied at 48 with under 1 second to play, McMain’s Corey Chest was fouled at the rim by Carver’s Solomon Washington and Chest would hit one of his two free throws to give McMain the 49-48 win.

“This is huge,” (Coach Steven) Kelly said as he sat with the championship trophy on a table in front of him. “Not only for our communities, but for the city of New Orleans. We’re bringing the trophy back Uptown. That’s one thing that is so huge for us.”
